After the success of “Rogue One” and “The Force Awakens”, Lucasfilms is attempting an even harder task- the Han Solo movie. This is not just a prequel but also the revamp of the franchise’s most beloved character, with a new actor playing the role.
If this fresh take on the scruffy-looking nerf herder can win over audiences, it could be the Holy Grail for Lucasfilm. Not just in the box office, but in how they will move forward with the storytelling. There is also the hope that this could be the start of a trilogy about Han Solo. George Lucas gave his blessing for movies focusing on individual characters. Here is what you what you need to know about the movie so far.
It’s in Safe Hands
If anyone knows Han Solo, it’s writer Lawrence Kasden. He is responsible for writing many of Solo’s most famous scenes. Kasden will be working with directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller on the film. With talented young actors like Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover and Emilia Clark added to the mix, it’s starting to look like a very safe set of hands to guide Han back to the big screen.
Questions Will Be Answered
Fans are expecting that one of the biggest questions in the Star Wars universe may be answered. That question is, how did Han Solo Meet Chewbacca? But as Kasden said it is only going to take 10 years before “A New Hope”, so don’t expect to see Han Solo as a young kid and get any answers from there.
New and Old Cannon
Han Solo’s backstory has fascinated Star Wars writers for years and Expanded Universe materials have been written about it. Recent Star Wars comics published by Marvel have taught fans that Han Solo once had a wife and fans are hoping that she will show up in the film. Also, Woody Harrelson has described his character “a mentor to Han” but also “a bit of a criminal” and it has been confirmed he will be Garris Shrike.
Who Are the Villains?
No one knows just who the bad guy will be in this film. Will the big bad be Jabba the Hutt, Woody Harrelson’s character or even the Empire? At the moment, all bets are off concerning the villain of the piece. It could even be Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian. Or it could be the unknown character played by Emilia Clarke; she can definitely do it.
Han Can Shoot First
Since this film takes place before the transition from smuggler to war hero, before Han met Old Ben, Luke and Leia, this will be a film where Han can shoot first. This is the Han that offers his services to desperate folk in dingy bars, the Han that snarks endlessly, and the Han that got right up in Jabba the Hutt’s slimy face and managed to walk away. This movie will be offering up the coolest, darkest, deadliest version of Han Solo.
The film is currently scheduled for release on May 25, 2018. But there are rumblings that this could change. There are sources who have been told to hold a December 13, 2018 release date for Han Solo.
